Manayunk.com - News & Resources

The public art project, a part of the reconstruction of the Manayunk Canal Towpath, once a neglected eyesore, serves both artistic and practical purposes. The nine mosaic stoops, stretching on the block between Cotton and Lock Streets, also serve as seats for the foot-weary.

The Skinny on Coffee - Health Condition Centers - MSN Health & Fitness

Americans are obsessed with coffee. We drink it to stay awake, treat ourselves, take a break and keep our energy up. But as our caffeine craze extends far beyond the simple black brew, it’s time to stop and ask: Is this quest for a delicious caffeine kick destroying our diets? Here, Marion Nestle, a New York City nutritionist and author of several books including What to Eat, gives her assessment of some popular coffee orders.

Order this: A large (16 ounce) regular coffee from McDonalds.

And you’ll drink this: 0 calories, 0 grams fat, 0 grams saturated fat and 0 grams carbohydrates.

Add one packet of cream, and you’ll drink this: 20 calories, 2 grams fat, 1.5 grams saturated fat and 0 grams carbohydrates.

Add the cream and one packet of sugar and you’ll drink this: 35 calories, 2 grams fat, 1.5 grams saturated fat and 4 grams carbohydrates

Marion Nestle’s take: “This is coffee—what's not to like? It probably isn't even super-caffeinated. But skim milk is a better choice than cream, if you can get used to it.”

Did you know?
Your coffee’s caffeine content depends on how you brew it. On average, an 8-ounce cup of drip coffee contains 184 milligrams of caffeine, while 8 ounces of percolated coffee contains 128 milligrams of caffeine and a cup of instant coffee just 104 milligrams of caffeine.

SLEEPY (Snow White / Walt Disney) large squeak toy

This 4.75" vinyl squeak toy of Snow White's Sleepy was manufactured during the 1970s as part of a complete set of Seven Dwarfs squeak toys. (We have several others in the set in stock at this time.) Sleepy is shown wearing a blue hat, light pink shirt, purple sash, green body piece, bright pink pants, and brown shoes as he stands there with his arms outstretched as if he's about to yawn. When squeezed, Sleepy gives off a gentle squeaking sound. The vinyl is undamaged and in very nice condition. Paint wear is minimal on this item. There are a few very small marks on Sleepy, leaving him in NM condition overall. This item bears the Walt Disney Productions marking but does not indicate its manufacturer.

Cool Hunting: Martin and Muñoz Snow Globes

Martin and Muñoz Snow Globes by Ami Kealoha

The quaint winter scenes often seen inside traditional snow globes turn deliciously bizarre and sinister in the hands of Walter Martin and Paloma Muñoz. Known for their highly-detailed dioramas of tiny figures exiled in frozen landscapes, past creations by artists Martin and Muñoz have included a horse walking away as a man hangs from a tree, and a man dangling a baby over an open well. Now the duo has collaborated with Cerealart to create a limited edition of three different snow-globes.

Each globe (pictured above, click for detail) is almost five inches in diameter and six inches tall and comes in a signed/numbered edition of 250. They are available for pre-order ($750) through Cerealart and Unica Home.

The couple has also been building dioramas with the sole purpose of photographing them. Some of these amazing images can be seen on their website, as well as on the website of their gallery P.P.O.W.

Cool Hunting: Studio On Fire 2007 Letterpress Calendar

Studio On Fire 2007 Letterpress Calendar by Ami Kealoha
Every year for the past five years Minneapolis-based designer Ben Levitz has been making letterpress desk calendars featuring the work of five designers he hand-picks from around the globe. Ben asks each to come up with images for two of the months and he takes care of the rest, resulting in a wonderfully eclectic mix to keep you inspired throughout the year. The just-out 2007 edition is the first he's produced since leaving his corporate job to head his own firm, Studio On Fire, and includes the work of Colorblok, Brian Gunderson, Rinzen, Plain Gravy and Faile. Opening with Ben's own Phoenix rising from fire (pictured above right) for January, an appropriate way to start the new year, other designs range from LA-based duo PlainGravy's retro New Wave graphics (they're the ones behind the controversial “Pharrell Can’t Skate” tee) to the masked girl by Berlin's Rinzen. All provide a modern contrast to the finely detailed, tactile quality of letterpress, which is flawlessly executed on Ben's vintage Heidelberg machines. Limited to an edition of 1000, you can order a calendar ($30 plus shipping) by sending an inquiry to info [a] studioonfire [dot] com. See more images here.

Cool Hunting: Aldrich Editions

At Basel the Aldrich Museum launched four new Aldrich Editions, their series of limited edition art objects, including the naughty platter by Mark Dean Veca. The dish, titled And So Betwixt the Two of Them, riffs on classic blue willow ware, replacing the love story with something much more hardcore, running $375. The three other new artists, Paul Henry Ramirez, John F. Simon, Jr., and Jane South, join the ranks of contributors like Janine Antoni, Rachel Berwick, Claire Corey, Jon Conner, and Markus Linnenbrink who've created Aldrich Editions in recent years. Starting at $100 for Antoni's human hair and leather bookmark that comes with her limited edition catalog and ranging to $3,500 for Roxy Paine's faux decay piece called Fecund, pieces can be purchased by contacting the museum directly.

Staying Happy at Work

My Monster:
Ten Tips for Staying Happy at Work
by Beverly West

If you find yourself longing for greener work pastures, don't immediately go looking for the first exit ramp off of your chosen career path. 10 tips for staying content at work:

1. When you're preoccupied with personal issues, it's difficult to concentrate or be happy at work, says Alison Rhodes, a founding partner of The Balance Team. By all means, make sure you have your kids covered in the event of an emergency, but realize that nobody's personal life is ever going to be completely problem-free. Just as you need to let go of work to enjoy your time at home, it's important to leave personal worries at home so you can focus and be productive at work.

2. Create an Office Nest: "You are at your job for at least eight hours a day, which is more time than you probably spend in your bed," says Jennifer Star, a founding partner of The Balance Team. "Make your space your own, decorate your area as much as your company policy permits, and make yourself as comfortable and relaxed as you can be in your office.

3. Develop an Office Support System: "Gathering a circle of colleagues who share similar backgrounds or lifestyles can take a lot of pressure off you at work," says Rhodes. "When you are able to voice your feelings to people who understand, it can really help minimize stress.

4. Eat Healthy and Drink Lots of Water: "Maintaining a good diet and keeping yourself properly hydrated throughout your workday can really make a big difference in your energy level and attitude," says Shirly Weiss, a certified holistic health and nutritional counselor and consulting expert for The Balance Team. "And if you can manage to maintain a diet of whole foods, as opposed to refined foods such as sugar and bread, then you'll really be ahead of the game.

5. Be Organized: Create a manageable schedule to handle your workload, suggests Stacy Raden, a founding partner of The Balance Team. "A sense of empowerment stems from accomplishment," she says. "When you feel overwhelmed, it tends to intensify dissatisfaction. By being proactive and taking control, employees can feel a sense of satisfaction, enhanced confidence and motivation.

6. Move Around: "Working in an office can be a very sedentary job, so it's especially important to your overall sense of health and happiness to take a few minutes during your workday to get up and move a little," says Jason Bergund, founding director of Dancetherapy, a dance class, and a consulting expert for The Balance Team.

7. Don't Try to Change Your Coworkers: "You can't change anyone; you can only change the way you react to them," says Star. "Don't let other people's actions affect you. Just figure out a way to resolve conflicts and avert uncomfortable situations."

8. Reward Yourself: Identify a reward outside of your job, and indulge yourself, says Raden. somthing else it be dinner with friends, a movie, exercise or a manicure, treat yourself every once in a while. Just as stress from home can interfere with work, the positive aspects of your life can influence mood at work as well.

9. Take a Breather: "In yoga, we practice the breath of joy, in which we inhale a long breath and then exhale laughter," says Sarah Schain, founding director of Yoga Tales studios for children and a consulting expert for The Balance Team. Stand with your feet together and your arms at your sides. Inhale deeply, then exhale laughter and bend forward. Try to do this movement 10 times.

10. Focus on the Positive: "Identify the things that you like at work, even if they are as simple as your coworkers or the nice view from your office window," says Raden. "You create your own mind-set. If you stress the positives, you will make your job more enjoyable. Worrying about the negatives may cause you to become overwhelmed."

Go Beyond Your Resume to Build Your Job Search Skills
— Peter Vogt

Given all the energy and stress involved in having your resume critiqued, followed by the inevitable rounds of revisions, you’re only human if you wind up thinking, “Enough already! I’ll live without anyone evaluating my work for, oh, the next decade or so.”

But no matter how great your resume is, you must confront a job-hunting truth: By itself, your resume won’t land you the job or even the opportunity to land the job. What this means from a practical standpoint is more critiquing of your overall job search skills. Here are several other key job search elements you’ll need to examine closely.

Your Cover Letter

For most employers, your cover letter is the first thing they see associated with your name. But they won’t like what they see if your letter is filled with grammar or content mistakes or is generic or jargon-laden.

“Your cover letter should be your story -- what makes you unique, perfect for the job and someone a company should interview,” says Brad Karsh, author of Confessions of a Recruiting Director and a former recruiter for advertising giant Leo Burnett.

Your Interviewing Skills

A mock interview lets you practice your interviewing skills with a career counselor, trusted friend or colleague who can critique the way you carry yourself and answer questions when the pressure’s on. You can even videotape the session so you can review your performance when it’s over.

“Would you even consider standing in front of people to sell them something without first doing some prep work?” asks Carole Martin, a former Monster contributor and author of Interview Fitness Training. “Of course not. So why would you think you could wing an interview?”

Your Appearance and Image

Are you dressing and grooming appropriately for your job interviews and networking meetings? Do you speak clearly and intelligently? Do you have bad breath, off-putting body odor or a strange haircut?

“If you don’t pay attention to the details of your appearance -- with pressed clothes, proper attire, proper hygiene -- an employer can reasonably question how you will pay attention to the details and important elements of your work,” says Pamela Holland, coauthor of Help! Was That a Career Limiting Move? and chief operating officer of Brody Professional Development.

Your Job Search Tactics

Job Web sites like Monster feature so many job openings to apply for -- and make it so easy to apply -- that you’ll be tempted to concentrate your job search efforts online. But you’ll have far more success if you diversify your search, especially by including plenty of networking and relationship-building activities like informational interviewing, getting involved in professional organizations, and asking for advice and leads from family, friends and colleagues.

The numbers don’t lie: In a 2005 study by outplacement firm DBM, 64 percent of respondents said they ultimately landed new jobs through networking.

Your Job Search Targets

In your job search, you may be doing everything right except the most important thing: Looking for the job that’s a good fit for your education, experience, skills, abilities and interests.

Who decides what a good fit is? Ultimately, it’s the employer, not you. If in the employer’s mind you’re pursuing a job that’s either far beneath or far beyond your capabilities, you’ll be out of the running in a hurry -- no matter how great your resume is.

SAKURASAKU Glass — OZOUX.COM : "Created by Hironao Tsuboi for 100% Design the Sakurasaku Glass leaves condensation traces shaped like cherry tree blossoms on surfaces. As usual, machine translation can't really do the poetic Japanese explanation justice:

外気とグラス内部の温度差で生じる結露の現象によって、卓上に桜の花が咲くグラスです。形や機能だけでなく使用する事で生じる現象をも美しく見せることで、邪魔にさえ思えた水滴が普段の生活にささやかな楽しみをもたらしてくれる大切な存在になるかもしれません。

It is the glass where the flower of the cherry tree blooms in the desk top with the phenomenon of the dew condensation which it occurs in temperature difference inside the air and the glass. By the fact that also the phenomenon which it occurs by the fact that you use not only shape and function is shown beautifully, in even the disturbance perhaps it becomes the important existence where the waterdrop which can be thought brings the small pleasure to usual life."
